As one of Germany’s longest inhabited cities, Augsburg boasts a wealth of history. Luther first visited Augsburg on his return journey from Rome in 1511. During this visit, he was confronted with a large wealthy city boasting magnificent cathedrals and homes acting as tribute to its power. Several years later in October of 1518, Luther would again visit Augsburg. This time being summoned to appear before Cardinal Caietan at the Diet of Augsburg.
